Start with the elevation, then define what each rate includes

A single “total feet” figure is difficult to check against a property. Record the front, rear, porch, garage, or other distinguishable runs separately. Each line needs the actual measured length and the selling rate for its stated specification. Count downspout assemblies and record their intended locations in the project notes.

Example 1: a straightforward front-and-rear replacement

The tool opens with two 48-foot elevations, four downspout assemblies, and 96 feet of removal. Every dollar below is a fictional selling-rate assumption. It is included to make the arithmetic inspectable, not to suggest what a contractor in any market should charge.

If the four outlets are already priced inside the four assemblies, their separate rate should be $0. On these same example inputs, the base then becomes $1,994. That $80 difference is a duplicate-charge correction, not a discount in return for selecting another product.

Currency rates round to cents first. Each run and separately priced charge then rounds to cents before the base is summed; the guard charge rounds separately. Measurement quantities can remain fractional. This keeps the displayed selling amounts consistent with the final quote.

Removal length does not have to equal the replacement length. A new porch run may have nothing to remove; a deleted run may require removal without replacement. Measure the relevant task instead of copying one quantity into every field.

Example 2: different runs and partial guard coverage

A second fictional property has a 42-foot front run, a 56-foot rear run, and a 24-foot porch run. Their documented specifications carry different selling rates. The homeowner is considering guards only on the front and rear, so proposed guard coverage is 98 feet even though the installation includes 122 run feet.

The estimate needs a location note explaining which runs receive the guard. Otherwise the homeowner may read “gutter guards” as coverage of every new gutter. If a guard is also proposed on an existing run outside the replacement scope, name that location and verify compatibility separately.

Use access as a stated selling amount for the actual access task. If the run rates already account for the same access cost, do not add it again. The calculator sums entered prices; it cannot identify two descriptions that charge for the same work.

Resolve scope gaps before comparing the totals

1. Product and accessory basis

   Record the material, profile, finish, gutter and downspout specifications, and the accessories included in each rate. “Seamless gutter” alone does not answer the remaining scope questions.

2. Discharge and existing condition

   Identify the proposed downspout termination or connection. Confirm what is known about the receiving arrangement and underlying attachment surface. Do not imply that underground drainage, fascia replacement, or unrelated repairs are included when they have not been priced.

3. Removal and protection

   State which existing components will be removed, how debris handling is priced, and the documented access or property-protection work. Photos and location references make these notes easier to review.

4. Guard option and maintenance expectations

   Name the proposed guard product and covered runs. Describe its stated scope using the selected product's information; do not promise that an optional guard eliminates all maintenance.

This is an estimate and communication tool, not a gutter-sizing calculator. Roof drainage design requires inputs and judgments that are absent here. A neat line-item total does not establish drainage capacity, code compliance, an underlying condition, or the scope of an insurer's coverage.

Check your selling rates against finished jobs

Keep the estimate's quantities and included work beside the completed job record. Review measured feet, assembly contents, removal, access time, materials purchased, and actual labor. If one job costs more than planned, identify whether the difference came from an omitted task, a measurement error, a purchasing change, or slower production before increasing every line rate.

A blended assembly rate may be useful for a group of genuinely comparable downspouts. It becomes misleading when one assembly includes a long offset and another is a short direct run. Document the actual combined scope and selling amount, or prepare separate worksheets for the different assembly groups. The shared assembly field is a planning simplification, not proof that every downspout should cost the same.

Walk through the quote in the same order as the property
